Nomination and Validators
For Polkadot, nomination is the process of placing your tokens behind a validator to receive rewards.
Validators ensure the security of the network and assist in the production of new blocks. On other DPoS networks, nomination is often referred to as authorization, but we will use the Polkadot term “nomination” in our documentation for clarity.
Key Takeaways
• Not picking enough validators may lead to you not getting rewards as the fewer your number of validators are, the less likely any one of them is to be picked by the system.
• Polkadot remains the leading, highest value, and most secure PoS platform offering over $10 billion in staked value.
If you are wondering how to stake on Polkadot, this article contains important information on how to decide which validator to pick. The following information applies to nominations in polkadot.js.
You must do your research before assigning, as there is a risk of shutdown if your validators misbehave. The Objectives tab in the permanent section of polkadot.js provides the following information about all validators and also allows you to nominate from this page.

Nomination Recommendations: Points to Consider
1. Select more than one Validator
As long as the system selects at least one of your designated validators, your cumulative participation rate will be fully shared among the active validators.
You risk not getting rewarded if you nominate too few validator candidates and none of them gets selected. Therefore, it is safer to choose as many validated validators as possible (up to 16).
2. Check if the Validator has verified your Identity
When you click on the name of the validator (in the corresponding review or on the landing page), a pop-up window with details will appear in its background, if any.
It means the validators have verified their identity with the domain registrar at Polkadot. Registered validators are marked with a green icon (with a checkmark or a chain) next to their name.
This means that their information, including their Twitter address, email, email, or website, has been verified.
To view only the list of registered validators, activate the “ID only” button in the upper right corner of the screen. If validators are on the list but are inactive, then they are in the process of identification.
3. Look for the “most profitable” option.
There is a button “more profitable” on the goals tab. clicking it will automatically select the most profitable validators. To accept this offer, simply click the “Selected Nomination” button and then “Nominate”.
4. Pay attention to the quoted commission
The block reward is shared with the nominators, but the validators will set the commission taken out of the profits to be given out for their costs.
This ratio can vary greatly. It is important to know that if you appoint a validator with a 100% commission, you will not receive a bonus as these validators are not looking for nominators.
Also, fees can vary, so keep an eye on who you nominate when placing your stake. The current commission rates are given under the “comm.” column.

5. Make sure that the Validator is not oversubscribed
Only the top 256 nominees are paid for a specific validator. (They used to be 64 and 128 in the past). The scale icon indicates validators that exceed this limit. You can choose others with fewer nominations to maximize your reward.
6. Look at how many “skin in the game” the Validator has
The “own stake” column shows how many of their DOT tokens the validator has put up as a stake and the “total stake” column shows how much your stake will count towards them.
7. Get some background details
Information such as the era points, selected rates, rewards, and columns can be found by clicking on the graph icon in the far right corner of each validator.
Once you have decided on your validators, check the asterisks (left) next to those you want to support on the targets page to add them to your favorites. This will bring them to the top of the list of validators. To assign them, check the box on the right.
Once you have made your choice, click on “Assign a Favorite” (top right) and follow the nomination process.
On the right side of the screen, next to each validator record, you can view its statistics and history. This will show you the era points that they get for creating blocks or interacting with parachains.
You can also see their rewards and slashes. As a result, the most reliable validators are those with the highest era rating and are usually not slashed.
Once you have selected a validator and assumed that you have connected your DOT wallet, you can simply check the box on the right side of the screen and select “Selected Nominations” at the top of the screen.
As you can see, there are many variables involved in validator selection. However, if you follow the steps in this guide, you will hopefully maximize your reward from participating in the DOT.
